My Personal Philosophy

Recreation Therapy: A wholistic process that purposively uses recreation and leisure of all different kinds to bring about a positive change socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically, or spiritually to improve quality of life.

"Smashley's Favorite" model is another model based off of positive psychology, flow, and self-determination theory. The idea is that a patient enters the model  before self determination and progresses through each phase.

First s/he must learn self determination. Self determination is when an individual chooses something of their own free will, without any other force compelling them in another direction. This stage emphasizes the patients ability to make decisions and choices of their own. This is where the patient learns about themself and learns to communicate their needs/wants with those around them.

Once a level of self-determination has been achieved the patient moves on to intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation means that a person does something because they want to, not because there is some sort of ulterior motive or exterior reward for making that decision. This step is all about motivation and the patient learning that there are such things as inherent rewards. This is where the patient learns to do things because s/he enjoys them or because they feel right. Once intrinsic motivation is learned a patient becomes more interested in whatever activity is being performed

After motivation comes challenge, more specifically perception of a manageable challenge. This phase emphasis the patient being able to asses use their skills. The climax/breakthrough comes when a patient realizes that s/he can overcome obstacles. This leads to parallels between game and the real world.

When a patient knows they can overcome challenges they will experience an increase or investment
of attention. At this point in the model the patient does more of the process on their own than with
help. At this point the patient may also experience the feeling of flow.

Whether or not the patient experiences flow, they will experience a sense of enjoyment at
overcoming the obstacle.

All proceeding phases lead to the patient's improved functionality. Smashly Emphasizes that it is enjoyment itself that leads to increased functionality, but my intuition tells me that it is all the steps before it that improve functionality. More research on my behalf is needed to draw a better conclusion to this theory.
